Alain Gomis’ Berlinale Competition Film ‘DAO’ Unveils Trailer
Paris-based company The Party Film Sales has unveiled the first trailer for Alain Gomis‘s “DAO,” in the run up to its world premiere in competition at the Berlin Film Festival. The movie marks Gomis’ comeback to the Berlinale where he won the Silver Bear with his previous film, “Felicity.”
Gomis’ sixth feature, “DAO” is a France-Senegal-Guinea-Bissau co-production with top French banners Les Films du Worso and SRAB Films (“Les Miserables”), alongside Senegalese co-producers Yennenga Productions and Nafi Films, and Telecine Bissau Produções in Guinea-Bissau.

Described in the press notes as “a perpetual circular movement framing reality,” “DAO” unfolds between two ceremonies, a wedding in France and a commemorative ritual in Guinea-Bissau. Penned and directed by Gomis, the film is led by a pair of newcomers Katy Correa and D’Johé Kouadio. True to Gomis’ method, almost none of the dialogue was scripted in advance, with scenes shaped in the present tense during the shooting which took place on location, between France and a village in Guinea-Bissau.

Blending non-professional presences and seasoned actors, the ensemble also includes Samir Guesmi, Mike Etienne, Nicolas Gomis, Fara Baco Gomis and Poundo Gomis.
Like all of Gomis’ films, music plays a large role in DAO, which boasts traditional ceremonial sounds and jazz by saxophonist Keïta Janota and Gaspard Gomis.
Gomis previously attended the Berlinale with “Tey” (“Aujourd’hui”) and “Rewind & Play.” He made his debut with the Locarno-winning film “L’Afrance.”
