Box Office: ‘Hoppers’ Bites Down on $13.2 Million; ‘The Bride!’ Stumbles With $3 Million
Pixar is hoping for a much-needed win this weekend with its original animated adventure “Hoppers,” which secured the top spot at the Friday box office.
“Hoppers” earned $13.2 million on Friday from 4,000 North American theaters. Disney and Pixar expect $40 million by Sunday, a figure that could run much higher thanks to stellar word of mouth and a lack of family-friendly fare in cinemas.

The animated comedy follows 19-year-old environmentalist Mabel, who transfers her consciousness to a robotic beaver (ala “Avatar”) to infiltrate the complicated world of the animal kingdom. “We Bare Bears” creator Daniel Chong serves as director and co-wrote the screenplay with Jesse Andrews. Cast members include Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, Kathy Najimy, Dave Franco, Eduardo Franco and Aparna Nancherla.

Pixar’s last original hit was 2017’s “Coco,” which opened with $50 million and ended its theatrical run with $210 million domestically and $823 million worldwide. Since then, the legendary animation studio has been on a losing streak with relative duds such as “Onward” and “Elio.” Those films launched to $39 million and $20 million, respectively, in the United States, but failed to stay in theaters long enough to justify their $150 million-plus budget. Disney and Pixar need “Hoppers” to chart a similar course to Illuminations’ “The Wild Robot,” or Sony’s “Goat,” which opened with mild success but went on to exhibit excellent box office staying power.

Second place went to “Scream 7,” which made just $3.5 million on its second Friday in theaters. Paramount and Spyglass Media expect $16.3 million by Sunday, representing a hefty 74% drop from its record-breaking opening weekend. Despite receiving some of the worst reviews in the franchise’s history, “Scream 7” is proving to be a box office force. The horror sequel opened to a franchise-best $64 million domestically and $97.1 million worldwide. Through two weekends of release, “Scream 7” is expected to push its North American total to $92.3 million, an excellent result considering the film was made for $45 million.

Third place went to Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, “The Bride!” The subversive, “Bonnie and Clyde” take on Mary Shelley’s classic grossed just $3 million domestically on Friday from 3,304 theaters. Initial projections had “The Bride!” earning $10 million to $15 million by Sunday, but rival estimates have the three-day debut as low as $6.7 million. That’s a scary start, considering “The Bride!” was made for $90 million.
Set in 1930s Chicago, the horror romance follows a street-hardened Frankenstein’s Monster, who revives a murdered woman and makes her his partner in love, life and crime. Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale lead as the undead lovers. Other cast members include Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening and Penélope Cruz.
Rounding out the Friday top five were “Wuthering Heights” and “GOAT.” “GOAT” landed at No. 4 with $1.5 million on Friday. Sony projects $6.1 million by Sunday, raising its North American earnings to $83 million. Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights” took fifth $1.2 million on Friday. The sexy literary romance hopes to pull in an estimated $3.7 million by Sunday, pushing its domestic total to $78 million.
