Ally Sheedy, Emily Robinson, Brant Daugherty and Margaret Cho Lead Queer Feminist Biopic ‘By the Roots’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Ally Sheedy (“The Breakfast Club,” “High Art”), Emily Robinson (“Eighth Grade,” “Transparent”), Brant Daugherty (“Fifty Shades Freed”) and Margaret Cho (“Fire Island”) will star in the upcoming feminist biopic “By the Roots.”
The feature film adaptation of the memoir “Daddy,” from writer-director Madison Young (“Submission Possible”), wrapped production in the San Francisco Bay Area in February.

“By the Roots” follows Madison (Robinson), a successful queer kinky gallerist and sexual revolutionary living in vibrant San Francisco in the early aughts. The past beckons Madison back to her place of origin to face a fragmented part of herself that has been left behind when she is pressured into returning to pastoral Southern Ohio for her mother’s birthday. Young confronts painful memories of the past and awkward conversations with her conservative family as she is confronted about her work in erotic films and her queer identity. She navigates these emotional landmines with the help of her partner, James (Daugherty) whom Young is in a BDSM relationship with, while coming face to face with a part of her childhood that she left behind.

“By the Roots” was uniquely filmed over the course of 7 months and broken into week-long modules of production while filming in San Francisco, Oakland, Brooklyn and Kingston, N.Y.. These blocks of filming allowed for cast and crew to have time to rest, reconnect with family and build community.

Young hopes that this queer story, told by a crew of 95% women and trans crew members, producers and artists will provide hope and healing for all those living out loud, outside of the box.

The film features award-winning actors side-by-side with the San Francisco queer and kink community, real-life drag kings, burlesque performers and Shibari rope artists.
Young is producing the film along with Laura Wagner (“Fremont”), with Ally Sheedy, Brant Daugherty, Diane Anderson-Minshall (Pride Media), Kylo Freeman(Autostraddle), Welland Scripps, Sam Scripps and Silas Howard exec producing. Laura Valladao (“Fremont,” “Premature”) serves as cinematographer. The production companies involved include Empress in Lavender Media, Boycott Entertainment and Bay Bridge Productions in association with Capsaicinco.
