After years behind a paywall, Lena Dunham and Alissa Bennett’s “The C-Word” podcast is breaking free. Radio broadcast and podcast company Audacy inked a deal with Dunham and Bennett to handle sales and distribution for “The C-Word.” The first three episodes of “The C-Word” will be re-released on all podcast platforms — available to listen to for free with ads — on Thursday, July 31. One episode will be re-released every Thursday thereafter.
“The C-Word” was originally available exclusively through podcast-subscription service Luminary. The show launched in May 2019 and comprises five seasons. It was produced by Pineapple Street Studios, a division of Audacy that the company shut down last month.
“We loved making ‘The C-Word,’ and now we’re thrilled to bring her out of the vault and into the hearts of listeners everywhere,” Dunham and Bennett said in a statement. “These stories are just as resonant today as when we first told them, and partnering with Audacy allows us to reach a broader audience.” “The C-Word” is described as “an in-depth exploration of culture’s most discussed women — their lives, legacies, and why society is so hell-bent on labeling them ‘crazy.’” Dunham and Bennett discussed a wide range of figures on the show including Lindsay Lohan, Judy Garland, Mariah Carey, Winona Ryder, astronaut Lisa Nowak, wrestler Chyna and journalist Janet Cooke (the only person to return a Pulitzer Prize). “Lena and Alissa’s fearless and funny storytelling make ‘The C-Word’ as great today as it was when they first created it, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring this show to a broader audience and offer advertisers the opportunity to align with their iconic voices,” said Leah Reis-Dennis, head of podcasts at Audacy. “This partnership underscores Audacy’s continued investment in premium podcasts and our ability to amplify distinctive creator-led storytelling through scalable, ad-supported distribution.”
