Cannes Festival Adds More Films to 2026 Lineup, Including ‘Victorian Psycho’ Starring Maika Monroe, and Diego Luna’s ‘Ashes’
Cannes Film Festival has announced more additions to its lineup, including Zachary Wigon’s horror film “Victorian Psycho” starring Maika Monroe, and Judith Godrèche’s feature debut “A Girl’s Story” for its Un Certain Regard section.
“Victorian Psycho” stars scream queen Monroe as Winifred Notty, an “eccentric young governess who arrives at the remote gothic manor known as Ensor House,” according to the film’s synopsis. “As Winifred assimilates into life at Ensor House, staff members begin to inexplicably disappear, and the owners of the estate begin to wonder if there is something amiss about their new governess.” The cast is rounded out by Thomasin McKenzie, Jason Isaacs, Amy De Bruhn and “Hamnet” breakout Jacobi Jupe. The film is produced by Dan Kagan (“Longlegs”) under his Traffic banner as well as Sebastien Raybaud (“Greenland: Migration”) for Anton and Wigon, in association with Anonymous Content.

The new additions also include Diego Luna’s “Ashes” in Special Screenings. Adapted from Brenda Navarro’s award-winning novel “Eating Ashes,” the Spanish-language drama stars Anna Díaz (“Let Me Be With You”), Adriana Paz (“Emilia Pérez”), Laura Gómez (“Orange Is the New Black”) and Charlie Rowe (“Wolf Hall).”

Godrèche’s “A Girl’s Story” is based on Annie Ernaux’s autobiographical novel about a girl who leaves her small village in 1958 to work at a summer camp where she is seduced by an older man. Another novel by Ernaux, “Happening,” was previously adapted for the bigscreen by Audrey Diwan and won the Golden Lion at Venice. Also slotted in Un Certain Regard is “Titanic Ocean,” a coming-of-age story of teenage girls training to be mermaids in Japan, directed by Greek filmmaker Konstantina Kotzamani. The slate also include two animated features, Leah Nelson’s “Tangles” in Special Screenings and Olivier Clert’s “Lucy Lost” in Family Screening.

As Variety exclusively revealed earlier on Wednesday, James Gray’s “Paper Tiger’ has also joined the lineup and will compete for the Palme d’Or. Starring Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver and Miles Teller, the gritty crime thriller follows two brothers as they try to achieve the American dream, only to become “entangled in a scheme that turns out to be too good to be true,” according to its plot description. “As they try to navigate their way through an ever-more dangerous world of corruption and violence, they find themselves and their family brutally terrorized by the Russian ‘Mafiya.’ Their bond begins to fray, and betrayal — once utterly unthinkable — now becomes all too possible.” Neon has secured North American rights for the hotly anticipated film, which is sure to be one of the buzziest on the Croisette.
Cannes Film Festival runs May 12 to 23.
