Apple is nearing a greenlight for a limited series starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cecily Strong, Variety has learned exclusively. The limited dramedy, titled “Nanny Squatter,” is inspired by the New York Magazine article of the same name by Bindu Bansinath. Mary Bronstein is attached to write, direct, and serve as showrunner. The logline states the show “centers on a couple whose lives are upended after welcoming a seemingly ideal caregiver into their home, only to find boundaries blurred and control slipping as the arrangement spirals into a tense, unsettling power struggle.”
Both Louis-Dreyfus and Strong are executive producers on the show, with Bronstein executive producing along with Scoop Wasserstein of New York Magazine. Apple Studios will produce.
Louis-Dreyfus is one of the greatest and most celebrated comedy actresses of all time. She is a 26-time Emmy Award nominee and an 11-time winner. Her wins include: one for her work in the seminal sitcom “Seinfeld;” one for “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” which ran for five seasons on CBS; and six consecutive wins for best actress in a comedy for leading the HBO political comedy “Veep,” with Louis-Dreyfus also sharing in the show’s three wins for outstanding comedy series. Strong previously starred in the Apple TV musical comedy series “Schmigadoon,” which ran for two seasons and inspired a live stage show of the same name. She is best known for her time on “Saturday Night Live,” where she worked as a cast member from 2012 to 2022. She received two Emmy nominations for her work on the show in 2020 and 2021. She has also been in films like “The Bronze,” 2016’s “Ghostbusters,” and “Zootopia 2.”
Bronstein most recently wrote and directed the critically-acclaimed film “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” starring Rose Byrne. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and was released by A24 in theaters in October of that year. Byrne has won a Golden Globe and numerous other accolades for the film, while she is currently nominated for an Academy Award for best actress. Bronstein also appeared onscreen in the film as Dr. Spring. Her other film credits include “Yeast,” in which she also starred in addition to directing.
