Statue of Liberty Origin Film in the Works With ‘The Intouchables’ Producers
Christian Duguay (“Jappeloup”) is set to direct “Lady Liberty,” a historical feature charting the creation of the Statue of Liberty.
Hailing from the producers of French smash hit comedy “The Intouchables” and Oscar-wining “CODA,” the film “Lady Liberty” will tell the backstory behind the birth of the Statue of Liberty, “tracing the artistic audacity of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the political vision of Édouard de Laboulaye, and the engineering ingenuity of Gustave Eiffel,” said Quad Cinéma and Gemma Pictures in a joint release.

Set against the backdrop of the 19th century, the film follows Bartholdi, a visionary artist, and Laboulaye, a revolutionary-minded lawyer, as they embark on the seemingly mad project of offering the American people a colossal statue honoring their struggle for liberty and democracy. What begins as a gesture of Franco-American fraternity evolves into the intimate story of an unlikely friendship between two men united by ideals and tested by doubt. Amid detractors, financial obstacles and technical challenges, the construction of the Statue of Liberty becomes a constant battle.

Duguay is known for crowd-pleasing prestige dramas that scored healthy box office results in France and sold internationally, including the horse-riding film “Jappeloup” starring Guillaume Canet; and the WWII-set “A Bag of Marbles” which was adapted from Joseph Joffo’s classic novel; as well as “Tempête.”
Quad Cinéma is best known for having produced Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache’s “Intouchables” which grossed $426 million worldwide; while Gemma Pictures was founded by Stéphane Celerier whose previous company Mars Films was involved in “CODA,” as well as produced the original film “La Famille Belier” and “Two is a Family” starring Omar Sy, among others.
