The Málaga Film Festival unveiled winners from its various lineups this afternoon, where Eva Libertad’s “Deaf” walked away with a fest-best four prizes, including best actress (Miriam Garlo), actor (Álvaro Cervantes), the audience award and best picture. Libertad’s debut feature is an expansion of the eponymous Goya-nominated short she co-directed with Nuria Muñoz, starring her sister Garlo, an acclaimed deaf actress. The film tells the story of Angela (Garlo), a pregnant deaf woman, and Hector (Cervantes), her hearing partner. Pregnancy brings to the surface her fears about motherhood and how she will be able to communicate with her daughter. The arrival of the girl generates a crisis in the couple and leads Angela to face the upbringing of her daughter in a world that is not made for her.
Acclaimed “A Thief’s Daughter” filmmaker Belén Funes’ latest, “The Exiles,” won Málaga’s special jury prize, best director award and best original screenplay award. The Catalan feature tells the stories of Anabel and her mother, Delia, who are grieving for Julián, Anabel’s father. An eviction notice forces them out of their Barcelona home and back to the olive groves of Jaén, which they previously left looking for a better future.
Another three-peat winner, Gemma Blasco’s buzzy genre thriller debut “Fury,” which world premiered at SXSW earlier this month, secured honors for best actress, supporting actor and editing. “Fury” tells the tale of a young woman trying to cope with a traumatic experience and who finds a channel for her rage on the stage. Vinko Tomičić’s Chilean solo debut, “The Dog Thief,” was honored as the year’s best Latin American feature in Málaga. Starring Alfredo Castro, the film follows an adolescent shoe-shining orphan, Martín (Franklin Aro Huasco), as he embarks on a quest to get closer to Mr. Novoa, a lonely tailor in town whom he believes may be his father.
