SciTech Awards Considering Six New Areas to Honor Including Pyrotechnic Devices and Automated Speech Restoration Tools
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has launched investigations into six new areas of scientific and technological achievement for consideration ahead of its Scientific and Technical Awards. The Awards honors technical innovations — including devices, methods, formulas, discoveries and inventions — that aid filmmakers or bring additional value to the cinematic arts.
The six areas of investigation are small pyrotechnic devices that are safe to use in proximity to cast and crew, layered shading systems for computer generated imagery, software suites for stop-motion photography, systems for custom art styles in animated features, automated speech restoration tools and conform management and sound auto-assembly software.

Individuals or companies who have contending innovations within these areas may submit their achievements to the Academy for review by its scientific and technical committee. After the investigations conclude, the committee will vote on recommendations to bring to the Academy’s Board of Governors for awards consideration. The Board of Governors then make the final awards decisions, which will be announced on April 28, 2026.

Darin Grant and Rachel Rose co-chair the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards committee. In a joint statement, they said, “We are inspired by the remarkable innovation shown in this year’s applications. Guided by a diverse committee of industry leaders, we are excited to learn more about the novelty, impact and adoption of these and similar technologies.”
The deadline to submit additional entries for the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards is Sep. 8 at 5:00 p.m. PT.
