Shimon Hayut, the notorious con man who was the subject of Netflix’s popular documentary “The Tinder Swindler,” has been arrested after allegedly stealing more than $52,000 from a woman in Berlin. Hayut was arrested in Georgia Tuesday, according to The New York Times. Hayut was previously arrested for fraud in 2019, where he was sentenced to 15 months in prison in Israel. After five months in jail, he was released.
“The Tinder Swindler” investigated Hayut’s romances with multiple women he had met on Tinder and used their money to buy luxury items, vacations to five-star hotels and travel on private jets. According to the documentary, Hayut impersonated a wealthy oligarch’s son, creating multiple credit lines using the names and personal information of the women he had gone on dates with from the app.
Hayut was arrested on Sept. 14 at Batumi International Airport after being questioned by authorities. He was accused of stealing around $52,000 from one of the women he had matched with, spending thousands of dollars using a credit card and a phone contract under her identity. Previously, the woman had paid around $10,600 for Hayut’s hotel and flights to stay in the Cayman Island after he revealed his credit card had been blocked. She claims she was never repaid for her purchases; Hayut has denied the allegations. On Tuesday, a court ruled that Hayut would be held in jail for three months or until Germany extradites him. Sagiv Rotenberg, Hayut’s lawyer, revealed that Hayut would be appealing his detention and was planning on seeking help on having his case dismissed in Germany.
